Khatoum,July 5 (Darfur24)  The Sudanese army chief, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, announced Monday that the military establishment has decided not to participate in the current negotiations to resolve the political crisis in the country. Al-Burhan said in a speech broadcast on state television that after the formation of the executive government, the Sovereignty Council will be dissolved and a Supreme Council of the Armed Forces will be formed to assume the supreme command of the regular forces and be responsible for security and defense tasks and related responsibilities in agreement with the government.

In recent weeks, the United Nations, the African Union and the East and Central African Development Community (IGAD), through what is known as the “tripartite mechanism”, have put pressure for a direct dialogue between the military and civilians. However, the main opposition blocs, such as the Forces for Freedom and Change and the Umma Party, rejected the proposal.

Al-Burhan’s decisions came as hundreds of Sudanese continued their sit-in for the fifth consecutive day in the streets of Khartoum and its suburbs to demand civilian rule and an end to the military coup carried out by the army chief last year.

Since the coup, 114 protesters have been killed, one of whom spent Saturday after being hit in the head by a tear gas canister in 16 processions..
