Human Rights Activist Mossab Taha Arrested During June 30, 2022 Sudan Protests, Faces Alleged Mistreatment and Torture

Khartoum, July 3, 2022 (Darfur24) – Sources have revealed that Mossab Taha, a prominent human rights activist, was arrested during the June 30, 2022 demonstrations and has since been transferred to an undisclosed location in Khartoum. Alleged reports suggest that the security forces targeted Mossab Taha due to his activism and advocacy for human rights.

According to an eyewitness who was also detained during the demonstration, Mossab Taha was singled out and subjected to severe torture and mistreatment, including physical assault. Darfur24 attempted to contact lawyers for insight into Mossab Taha’s situation, but they remain unaware of the specifics behind his arrest and detention.

Witnesses from the demonstration detailed the harsh treatment endured by the detainees in the initial hours of their captivity, describing incidents of beatings, forced head shaving, humiliation, and various forms of torture. Authorities resorted to psychological tactics, threatening detainees despite their health conditions and the challenging circumstances, including inadequate food provision.

On June 30, 2022, thousands of protesters gathered in Khartoum and other cities across the country, demanding full civilian rule. It is estimated that around 150 individuals, including women, were arrested during these protests.

Ahead of the June 30, 2022 protests, Sudanese authorities cut off internet and communications services in Khartoum state, anticipating the demonstrations that aimed to march towards the presidential palace in Khartoum.

In a statement received by Darfur24, the Sudanese Human Rights Initiative (SHRI) disclosed that security forces in Khartoum State apprehended Mossab Taha, a dedicated human rights activist. The SHRI condemned the continued detention of their co-founder, emphasizing the urgent need for his release and holding the security forces accountable for his safety.

Reports indicate that at least 150 detainees, including 27 women, were arrested on June 30, 2022, in the northern Khartoum district, where they were subjected to severe violations by the security forces. Among those detained is Mossab Taha, a prominent figure in human rights advocacy.

Taha’s arrest is linked to his unwavering political views against the military regime, his dedicated work in human rights and civil society, and his collaboration with resistance committees, where he provides support and monitors violations against them.

Human rights organizations have issued warnings regarding the ongoing violations and mistreatment by security forces, urging the Public Prosecution to intervene and demand the immediate release of all detainees held in prisons and custody.
