Nyala, March 16( Darfur24) Governmental and commercial banks in the city of Nyala, capital of South Darfur, western Sudan, closed this morning, Wednesday, after a wave of demonstrations that took place in the large market of Nyala, where the premises of these banks are located.
Hundreds of school students demonstrated in the city for the fourth consecutive day, protesting against the increase of public transportation tariff of and the price of bread.
The Central Bank of Sudan and other banks closed their doors to the public for fear of looting and sabotage.
Faisal Islamic Bank, the branch of Nyala, was subjected to vandalism and smashing of its windshield in similar demonstrations that took place last year.

Because of the student protests rejecting the increase in transportation and bread tariffs in the city, the Nyala Secondary School for Boys witnessed yesterday an incident of intrusion by a police force led by a lieutenant on the school’s campus and engaged in verbal altercations with teachers, which drew widespread condemnation from the Sudanese community, and in solidarity with the teachers.
While the state government and the leadership of the Sudanese police forces were forced to apologize to the teachers for the incident, the police suspended the officer leading the force from work, and the state governor announced the formation of an investigation committee into the incident.
