Dozens of primary and secondary school students in the city of Nyala, capital of South Darfur, western Sudan, took part in demonstrations this morning, Sunday, in protest against the rise in bread prices and transportation tariffs.
Demonstrations took place in Congo Street in the city center and Al Jabal Street in the east of the city, while the newspaper’s delegate saw dozens of students in the Al Wahda neighborhood in the south of the city, denouncing the high price of loaves and the increase in the tariff of transportation.
The Executive Director of Nyala Shamal Locality said that Nyala North Locality and Nyala Municipality will take decisive decisions regarding the tariff, stressing that fuel is a main reason for the increase.
The price of the loaf increased from 33 pounds to 50 pounds, and the tariff of conductors from 100 pounds to 150 pounds.
Student protests erupted last year in the city of Nyala after an increase in the tariff of conductors led to the looting and sabotage of the large market in Nyala and the burning of a police car, in addition to the injury of citizens and policemen.
