September 2, 2021 (Khartoum) On Thursday, a United Nations report revealed that more than 80,000 people were affected by torrential rains and floods that hit large parts of Sudan.
According to a report by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), heavy rains and floods have affected more than 88,000 people in 13 out of 18 states in Sudan since the start of the rainy season in July.
More than 12,700 homes were damaged and more than 4,800 homes were destroyed. Most of the families affected by the heavy rains and floods were forced to shelter with relatives and move to government buildings.
Heavy to very heavy rains are expected between August 31 and September 7, according to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Center for Climate Prediction.
The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources reported that the water levels in the Nile are higher than the level of flood risk in the Khartoum, Al-Dim and Shendi stations.
Sudan’s Humanitarian Aid Commission and relief organizations, began providing life-saving assistance to those affected.
