August 20, 2021 (Al-Daein) On hursday, young protesters stopped oil production operations in the Mazroub field 120 kilometers east of El Daein city, the capital of East Darfur state, and seized the heavy machinery of the oil-producing Petro Energy Company in the field.
According to some of the young people who spoke to Darfur 24, the step to stop oil production came in protest of the oil companies in East Darfur’s failure to implement their obligations towards the local community by providing services in the areas of health, water and education.
However, the angry protesters also demanded to provide employment to the area’s youth, and address the environmental pollution that resulting from the remnants of oil production.
Five months ago, young people from the Sufyan, Scharf and Abu Jabra areas closed the oil fields and demanded that companies submit service projects in the areas adjacent to the fields.
Oil Minister Jaden Ali Obeid visited the areas where the oil fields are located, and pledged in front of the people and in the presence of the Governor of East Darfur to push the companies to implement all their demands.
There are five oil fields in East Darfur, the most important of which are Sharf and Sufyan, all of which produce about 20,000 barrels per day.
