A fire on Monday destroyed more than three thousand houses in Gereida locality in South Darfur state, killing at least three elderly people, as well as the death of large numbers of livestock.

Mubarak Mahkhar, executive director of Gereida locality told Darfur 24, that nearly 4 thousand families are left in the open after they lost their homes due to the fire, describing the situation as tragic, calling on the state and humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently to provide food and shelter for those affected.

Mubarak said local efforts failed to control the fire, indicating that most of the houses were built with local materials, “straw and wood.”
