The governor of East Darfur state , Dr. Muhammad Issa Aliu, has acknowledged the existence of security tensions in three localities in the state due to a new conflict between the Rizeigat and Ma’alia tribes over agricultural lands in the adjacent areas between the localities of Abu Karnaka, Abu Jabra and Asalaya.
It has been reported that the area of Badi, 45 kilometers north of the city of Al-Daain, is currently witnessing gatherings of armed groups from the two tribes.
Aliyu told Darfur 24 that the conflicts started individually between farmers, and then developed into a tribal character in these localities.
He mentioned that his government summoned the leaders of the two tribes to consult with them before making security decisions .
Aliyu did not rule out that his government forbids cultivation of the disputed areas in order to avoid war, until disputes are settled by the judiciary.
The communal violence between the Rizeigat and Ma’alia tribes dates back to the sixties of the twentieth century, and renewed in 2003 in the village of Tibet, and in 2013, leaving more than 2,000 dead and about 5,000 wounded, according to statistics of Reconciliation conferences between the two tribes.
