On Wednesday, the Sudanese government and the World Bank signed an agreement, according to which the World Bank provides a grant of 390 million dollars in the second phase of the family support program, which amounts to a total of 820 million dollars.

Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Gabriel Ibrahim, signed for the government, while Othman Dion, the country director of the bank in Sudan, signed for the World Bank.

Gibreil said that the agreement is a qualitative achievement by which the country has crossed into the international community through the World Bank portal.

The first phase of the program ($400 million) was officially launched on February 24, 2021 in Khartoum in the presence of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok. Approximately 11.3 million people are expected to benefit from the initial phase of the project that will be implemented in Khartoum, Red Sea, South Darfur, and Kassala states, representing 33% of the total expected number of beneficiaries when the program is at full scale.

World Bank Country Director, Othman Dion, expressed his happiness for the continuation of the partnership with Sudan for the success of this program, by providing the government with all possible capabilities and resources for its citizens.

Specifically, the program will provide five U.S. dollars to each qualified person in a household initially for a period of six months.

Subject to funding availability, the transfers will be ramped up to twelve months, with the aim of eventually reaching 80% of the population or nearly 32 million citizens.
