Mr. Volker Peretz has officially assumed his duties as the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Sudan and head of the United Nations Integrated Mission to Support the Transition in Sudan UNITAMS, upon his arrival in Khartoum on Tuesday.
Upon arrival, Mr. Peretz was received by Ambassador Omar Al-Sheikh, Chairman of the National Executive Committee to coordinate with UNITAMS.
“I look forward to working with the transitional authorities, and the great people of Sudan, and I will devote my energy to support Sudan achieve its goals of democratic transformation, peace and economic recovery” Peretz said
According to a statement seen by Darfur24,Mr. Peretz will remain in quarantine for seven days to ensure that he is not infected with the Coronavirus, as a precaution before starting a schedule of meetings with national authorities, partners and colleagues. Mr. Peretz holds master’s and doctorate degrees in political science from the University of Duisburg in Germany. He is fluent in German, English and Arabic..
According to the statement that the Special Representative of the Secretary-General looks forward to working with the United Nations family and its partners on a large scale in support of a peaceful transition to democracy in Sudan, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2524.
Prior to his appointment, Peretz held the position of CEO and Director of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), and prior to that, he worked as a senior advisor to the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Syria.
