The Sudanese human rights organization, “Front Line Defenders”, has called on the Sudanese government to conduct an urgent and independent investigation into the killing of a lawyer and human rights activists.
Human rights activist ,Faisal Yusuf Mohammed , was killed on 17 January 2021 at his home in the city of Geneina, West Darfur, by unknown armed groups.
The late human rights defender was a member of the “Amiriya” neighborhood resistance committee, which often organizes peaceful demonstrations to promote civil and economic rights in Sudan.
Faisal Yusuf was also a member of El Geneina Legal Network, a network of legal assistants who provided legal aid to the internally displaced in refugee camps in West Darfur.
On January 17th, at 10 pm, several members of unidentified armed group entered the house of Faisal Yusef Muhammad in Al-Geneina and killed the human rights defender alongside two of his brothers.
The human rights defender had previously faced multiple threats from both gunmen and the authorities over his human rights work.
On January 23, 2021, the United Nations Security Council held an urgent session regarding the escalation of tribal violence in Darfur
The upsurge of tribal fighting in Darfur, came at the backdrop of the UN security council resolution that led to withdrawal of UNAMID mission from the war-torn region.
