December 7, 2020 (Nyala) The internally displaced persons of Kalma camp, 17 kilometers east of the city of Nyala, staged a peaceful march on Monday, urging UN Security Council to reverse its decision regarding the withdrawal of UNAMID mission from Darfur.
The demands of the displaced people in the camps of South Darfur came a day before the convening of the Security Council session on the eighth of December which will be devoted to discussing the situation in Darfur, in which the Security Council is expected to decide to implement the decision to exit the mission from Darfur at the end of December.
The displaced people handed over a memorandum to UNAMID mission office in Kalma camp in which they demanded that UNAMID mission stay in Darfur.
The General Coordinator of IDPs and Refugee in Darfur, Yaqoub Mohammad Abdullah, said that in light of the continued violations and attacks on civilians in Darfur, the displaced had lost confidence in the government forces.
“The displaced people want to convey a message to the Security Council that they are weak and afraid for their fate after the departure of the UNAMID mission” Yagoub added.
Hanan Hassan a female IDP from Kalma said that the departure of UNAMID mission from Darfur means a threat to the lives of thousands of displaced people who are living under the protection of the UN forces.
The Sudanese government has repeated its refusal to maintain UNAMID while a new mission prepares to be deployed to support the political transition in Sudan including the implementation of peace agreements.
The transitional government prepared a national plan to protect civilians in the Darfur region when the hybrid peacekeeping forces leave the region.
Last June, the UN Security Council extended the UNAMID mandate until the end of 2020 and requested to create coordination with the UNITMAS to determine the modalities and timelines for the handover of responsibilities in Darfur.
