The Sudanese Journalists Network has won the Reporters Without Borders Award for Freedom of the Press for the year 2020.
The award committee said that the network’s victory came in appreciation of its role in defending freedom of expression and the press, and its participation in leading the civil struggle in Sudan.
The Sudanese Journalists Network said in its remarks at the award ceremony: The principle of impunity remains a direct threat to the general public of societies and makes them vulnerable to misleading and false information and forgery.
Reporters Without Borders is an international organization whose work covers the five continents through its national departments in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Spain, France, Italy, Sweden, and Switzerland, and it has offices in Bangkok, London, New York, Tokyo and Washington. It cooperates closely with local and regional organizations to defend press freedom.
Reporters Without Borders awarded press freedom awards last year to three female journalists, one of whom is Saudi blogger Iman Al-Nafjan.
The Sudanese Journalists Network helped found the Sudanese Professionals Association, a gathering of professional bodies that led the protests that toppled Omar al-Bashir, who ruled Sudan for three decades.
