September 5, 2020 (Khartoum) The Sudanese Security and Defense Council decided, at dawn on Saturday, to impose a state of emergency for a period of 3 months and to consider the country as a disaster
zone to ward off the effects of torrents and floods.
Floods have caused severe damage in Sudan this year, as they killed 99 people, collapsed tens of thousands of homes, and affected more than half a million people, according to Ministry of Interior statistics.
The Defense Council, headed by the Chairman of the Sovereign Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, decided to form a supreme committee to prevent and address the effects of torrents and floods
this fall.
In a press statement after the meeting, Minister of Labor and Social Development Lina Al-Sheikh said that the council had declared the emergency after hearing reports related to this year’s floods and its
assessment of the size of human losses and material damage.
