February 3, 2020 (Khartoum) – Chief of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, met in Uganda on Monday evening and agreed to start normalizing ties between Sudan and Israel.  It was the first meeting between leaders of the two countries.

Immediately after the meeting, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement: “It has been agreed to start a cooperation that will lead to normalizing the ties between the countries”.

The Prime Minister and Chairman of the Sovereign Council of Sudan, Al-Burhan, met today in Entebbe, at the invitation of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, and  agreed to start cooperation that would lead to the normalization of relations between the two countries,” the statement said.

Netanyahu’s bureau also stated that “Prime Minister Netanyahu believes that Sudan is moving in a positive direction, and the prime minister has expressed his outlook to the American secretary of state. The head of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council is interested in helping his country go through a process of modernization by taking it out of isolation and placing it on the map”.

An Israeli source said that the development is immediately expected to affect the route of flights from Israel and enable aircrafts to fly over the African country, a development that had already been floated as early as 2018.

Israeli media, quoting a source accompanying Netanyahu during his visit to Uganda, said that the latter says he will soon announce the establishment of diplomatic relations with  unspecified Arab country, without revealing any further details.
