Nyala, October 17 (Darfur24)

A drone strike believed to have been carried out by the Sudanese army hit a livestock market north of Nyala on Friday morning, killing several people and injuring others, including women and children, according to residents.

Eyewitnesses told Darfur24 that the drone fired two missiles, one of which struck the Al-Shuwayat section of the market, where groups of people were gathering for breakfast.

The strike destroyed restaurants and cafes, killing and injuring people at the scene. The wounded were taken to Nyala Teaching Hospital and other health centres in the city, a medical source said.

Witnesses said several people remained missing and were feared trapped beneath the rubble. Heavy machinery arrived more than three hours after the strike to help recover those buried under the debris.

The number of people killed and injured remained unclear at the time of publication.

Other eyewitnesses told Darfur24 that Rapid Support Forces (RSF) intelligence personnel closed the livestock market after the explosion, blocked access roads and arrested several people who had been near the scene.

Widespread looting followed the strike, with shops and private property reportedly targeted.

Drone strikes believed to have been carried out by the Sudanese army have continued to hit Nyala, causing civilian casualties, including women and children.

UN reports have documented a growing toll from drone attacks in Sudan, as both sides increasingly use the weapons in the conflict, putting civilians at further risk.
