Khartoum, October 12 (Darfur24)
Two Egyptian nationals were killed and a third wounded in a shooting at a market in Khartoum, police said on Monday, announcing the arrest of the suspected gunman.
A police spokesman said the suspect opened fire on a group of people, killing two Egyptians and injuring another. Police seized the weapon and launched an investigation into the circumstances and motive for the attack.
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said it was following up on the incident, in which three Egyptian truck drivers were shot. Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty instructed the Egyptian ambassador to Sudan to contact Sudanese authorities and check on the injured man. Ministry spokesman Nader Zaki said Sudanese authorities had confirmed the suspect’s arrest.
The shooting occurred two days after reports that Egyptian warplanes struck mining sites inside Sudan, killing about 200 miners and sparking public outrage.
Egypt has previously carried out raids on artisanal mining areas along the Sudanese-Egyptian border. In June, an airstrike on a mine reportedly killed 15 people. The following month, Egyptian authorities arrested dozens of Sudanese miners, accusing them of entering the country illegally, before deporting some to Sudan.
In March, at least nine Sudanese miners were killed in clashes involving gunmen and Egyptian border guards in the Wadi al-Ansari area along the two countries’ border.
