Nyala, October 08 (Darfur24)
Schools in Nyala, South Darfur State, remained closed on Thursday for a second consecutive day following the death of a teacher in a traffic accident involving a vehicle belonging to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Eyewitnesses told Darfur24 that teacher Mohamed Hamed was killed and several students were injured on Wednesday when an RSF combat vehicle struck them on Jebel Marra Street in Nyala.
The witnesses said the vehicle was travelling at high speed and ran over Hamed and several students from Afaq Al-Mustaqbal Secondary School as they crossed the street.
They said the driver initially refused to stop, prompting student protests along Al-Kanqo and Al-Wahda streets in the city’s First District. Protesters reportedly set tires on fire during the demonstrations.
Hamed and the injured students were taken toward Nyala Teaching Hospital following the incident, but he died before reaching the hospital, according to witnesses.
Hamed taught Arabic at several secondary schools in Nyala.
