The Sudan Atrocities Prevention and Justice Coalition has condemned the August 30 attack on a World Food Programme (WFP) humanitarian convoy in South Kordofan, which destroyed 50 metric tons of food aid and injured civilian drivers.
The coalition, comprising the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Sweden, Ireland, Germany, France, Denmark, Canada, Norway and the European Union, said the attack targeted two WFP trucks outside Dilling as they travelled to Kadugli.
The trucks were clearly marked with WFP logos, and all relevant parties had been informed of the convoy’s movements, the coalition said in a statement.
It stressed that attacks against humanitarian workers and humanitarian operations violate international humanitarian law and called on all parties to protect civilians and facilitate safe, rapid and unhindered humanitarian access.
The coalition said the food destroyed in the attack would have assisted about 5,800 people for a month, according to the WFP.
It described the incident as another example of the growing impact of drone warfare on civilians and civilian infrastructure, including markets, health facilities and displacement sites.
The coalition called for a credible investigation into the attack and appropriate accountability measures to prevent similar incidents.
The WFP is currently supporting about 58,000 people in Kadugli who are facing food insecurity.
