Efforts are underway in Nyala, South Darfur State, to rehabilitate and reopen Nyala University under the civilian administration aligned with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as the institution remains divided between rival administrations in Nyala and Port Sudan.
The rehabilitation drive follows a pledge by the head of the RSF’s civilian administration in South Darfur to restore the university’s facilities in time to receive students who sat the Sudanese secondary school examinations organized by the administration in June.
Popular and official committees, including engineering and sanitation teams, have been formed to oversee the restoration work.
Two university sources told Darfur24 that rehabilitation is currently focused on the main campus near the industrial area and does not include the university’s Musia campus in southern Nyala.
The sources said the Musia campus is currently being used as an advanced training institute by the RSF.
Founded in 1994, Nyala University suffered extensive looting and damage during fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF, leaving much of its infrastructure and educational facilities destroyed.
Meanwhile, the university administration affiliated with Sudan’s Ministry of Higher Education continues to operate from White Nile and Khartoum states, while the RSF-backed civilian administration is seeking to resume academic activities from the university’s main campus in Nyala, highlighting the growing institutional divisions caused by the war.
