Thousands of displaced people sheltering in camps across El Obeid, North Kordofan State, are facing severe humanitarian conditions amid a lack of aid and restrictions on humanitarian access, a local volunteer told Darfur24.
The volunteer said authorities have limited the work of aid organizations and volunteers and kept several displacement sites out of the public eye. Camps in Al-Makhazin, Abrasi, Al-Taqana, Dal, and two sites near the Technology College, as well as schools hosting displaced families, are all reportedly receiving little or no humanitarian assistance.
According to the volunteer, the camps host hundreds of families, including about 800 in Abrasi, 600 in Dal, 300 in North Technology, and 120 near the Technology College. He added that 26 newly displaced families recently arrived at the Abrasi camp.
A June 22 report by the Camp Coordination and Camp Management Cluster and UNHCR warned of worsening conditions at the Land Port and Khor Taqqat displacement sites in El Obeid, which together host more than 68,000 displaced people. The report cited overcrowding, inadequate basic services, protection concerns, and growing flood risks as the rainy season approaches.
It also noted that local authorities continue to manage the sites in the absence of formal camp management structures, while humanitarian needs continue to grow with the arrival of displaced families from across the Kordofan region.
