Kordofan, June 18 (Darfur24)
The Ministry of Health of the Founding Alliance (TASIS) officially declared a cholera outbreak in areas under its control in the Kordofan region on Wednesday, following laboratory confirmation of the disease.
In a statement, the ministry said that eight out of ten samples sent to the National Public Health Laboratory in South Sudan tested positive for cholera, confirming the outbreak.
The announcement follows weeks of reported cases of acute watery diarrhea in the Fuga area of West Kordofan State, where local sources previously told Darfur24 that at least 80 people had died.
According to the ministry, health authorities had treated the situation as a suspected cholera outbreak from the onset, based on clinical symptoms and rapid diagnostic tests, pending laboratory confirmation.
The ministry reported that 758 cholera cases and 66 deaths have been recorded since the first case was identified in the Fuga administrative unit of Al-Nahud locality on May 11, 2026.
West Kordofan remains the most affected state, although additional cases have also been reported in several localities in neighboring North Kordofan State.
Health authorities stated that response measures are ongoing in coordination with humanitarian partners and local administrations. These efforts include treatment of patients, enhanced disease surveillance, public health awareness campaigns, water and sanitation interventions, and the establishment of oral rehydration points and specialized cholera treatment centers in affected communities.
The ministry urged residents to follow preventive measures, including drinking safe water, washing hands regularly, handling food hygienically, and seeking immediate medical care if symptoms such as acute watery diarrhea or vomiting appear.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to containing the outbreak and protecting public health in affected areas.
