Al Daein, June 04 (Darfur24)

The Civil Founding Council of East Darfur State announced on Thursday the death of its chairman, Issa Abdelkarim Abu, while receiving medical treatment in South Sudan.

In a statement, the council mourned its chairman, describing him as a national figure and a dedicated public servant who devoted his efforts to the causes of Darfur and its people. It said he remained a voice of wisdom and moderation throughout his public service.

The council serves as the legislative and oversight body supervising the performance of the civil administration in areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces.

Issa Abdelkarim Abu became the first chairman of the East Darfur Civil Founding Council after being selected by the Rapid Support Forces Advisory Council in 2024.

During his tenure, the council witnessed one of its most significant political developments when members voted to withdraw confidence from the head of the state’s civil administration over allegations of financial mismanagement and corruption. The council later reversed the decision, allowing the official to remain in office.

The statement did not disclose the cause of death or provide details about the duration of his treatment in South Sudan.
