El Fasher, March 18 (Darfur24)

Health sources have reported a measles outbreak in the town of Um Jalbakh, northwest of El Fasher in North Darfur State, with deaths recorded among children as the disease spreads.

A medical source told Darfur24 that the town has seen a sharp rise in infections in recent days, with dozens of children affected amid a near-total absence of vaccination services.

The source attributed the outbreak to the suspension of immunization campaigns, a shortage of vaccines, and the disruption of routine vaccination programs, all of which have worsened the health situation in the area.

He added that the collapse of basic health services has forced some families to turn to traditional remedies, increasing the risk of complications among infected children.

Meanwhile, Doctors Without Borders said it had received reports from its field teams confirming measles cases among children in the town.

The organization warned that the prolonged suspension of vaccination campaigns in conflict-affected areas, particularly in North Darfur, heightens the risk of infectious disease outbreaks among vulnerable populations, especially children.
