Washington, March 10 (Darfur24)
The United States Department of State announced on Monday that it has added the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood to its list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists, as part of steps toward formally designating the group as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, with the decision set to take effect on March 16.
In a statement obtained by Darfur24, the State Department said the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood includes the Sudanese Islamic Movement and its armed wing, the Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigade.
According to the statement, the group has used violence against civilians in ways that undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan while promoting what it described as extremist Islamist ideology.
The statement said the organization has deployed more than 20,000 fighters in the ongoing war in Sudan, adding that many of them have reportedly received training and support from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
It also accused fighters from the Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigade of carrying out mass executions of civilians in areas under their control and of repeatedly executing civilians based on race, ethnicity, or suspected affiliation with opposition groups.
The United States Department of the Treasury had previously imposed sanctions on the Al-Baraa bin Malik Brigade in September 2025 for its role in the war in Sudan.
The State Department said the designation aims to expose and isolate individuals and entities linked to the group, denying them access to the U.S. financial system and resources that could be used to carry out attacks.
Under the decision, all property and interests belonging to the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood within the United States, or under the control of U.S. persons, will be frozen.
The statement added that U.S. individuals and entities are prohibited from conducting business with the sanctioned group, warning that those who engage in certain transactions with it could face sanctions under U.S. counterterrorism laws, including possible secondary sanctions.
