Mellit, January 26 (Darfur24)

More than 20 people were killed and others injured in drone strikes targeting the town of Jebel Issa and the city of Mellit in North Darfur State on Sunday evening.

Ibrahim Al-Toumi, a local leader, told Darfur24 that a drone, believed to belong to the Sudanese army, bombed the main market in Jebel Issa, about 140 kilometers northwest of Al-Malha. He said the attack caused significant civilian casualties and injuries, and led to major losses in goods belonging to residents and traders from nearby villages.

Al-Toumi added that the strike hit a commercial vehicle as passengers were leaving the market, contributing to the high number of casualties. He noted that some victims inside the market had not yet been identified.

In Mellit, two sources told Darfur24 that a drone strike targeted a site used as a Starlink satellite internet point west of the city, killing several civilians and wounding others. They said some of the injured were transferred to the city’s rural hospital for treatment.

The sources reported that the drone flew over Mellit before striking multiple locations, including the internet site and a Rapid Support Forces vehicle parked near the main market.

Drone attacks have increasingly been used in the conflict that has gripped Sudan since April 2023.
