The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, arrived in Port Sudan on Wednesday to begin a two-day official visit to Sudan, focusing on the country’s humanitarian and human rights situation.

Türk was received at the airport by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Muawiya Osman Khalid, and the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice and Head of the Legal Sector, Maulana Ali Khader.

According to a statement, the visit includes meetings with government officials and institutions concerned with human rights, as part of the UN’s ongoing engagement on the humanitarian and rights conditions in Sudan.

The High Commissioner is also scheduled to visit Northern State, where he will inspect camps for internally displaced persons, including the Al-Afad and Ad-Dabba camps, to assess living conditions and the availability of basic services for displaced communities.

Türk is expected to hold a press conference at the conclusion of his visit to present his findings and assessment of the humanitarian and human rights situation in the country.
