Al-Daein, January 13 (Darfur24)

The Rapid Support Forces released East Darfur Mayor Mahmoud Musa Kasha on Monday, weeks after arresting him over his role in organizing protests in Al-Daein demanding the release of detainees, sources told Darfur24.

Sources said the mayor’s release followed mediation by the state’s native administration. As part of the arrangement, Kasha reportedly signed a statement pledging not to interfere in the military and security affairs of the Rapid Support Forces.

In December, RSF forces in Al-Daein arrested seven civilians, including tribal leader Mahmoud Kasha, hours after they organized a protest calling for the release of civilians detained by the RSF and transferred to Daqris prison in Nyala, citing deteriorating health conditions.

In January, the RSF launched a broad arrest campaign across East Darfur targeting politicians, former military personnel, and civil service officials. Those detained were transferred to Daqris prison west of Nyala, where they are held under harsh humanitarian conditions, according to local sources.
