Port Sudan, December 8 (Darfur24)

The Sudanese Civil Aviation Authority announced on Saturday the opening of two new air routes in Sudanese airspace, according to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the authority.

The authority said the new routes were approved after meeting all requirements set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), in line with global technical and safety standards.

In its statement, the Civil Aviation Authority noted that the step reflects continued progress toward restoring full operations in Sudan’s airspace. It comes as part of broader efforts to secure and gradually resume air traffic in accordance with the highest safety and security requirements, support international air navigation, and strengthen the role of the civil aviation sector during the current phase.

The opening of the two routes was described as a significant milestone that contributes to the gradual return of aviation activity in the country and enhances the readiness of airlines to resume flights through Sudanese skies.

Khartoum International Airport, home to the Civil Aviation Authority and the air traffic control center, was among the first sites attacked by the Rapid Support Forces at the outbreak of the war. The airport sits near key military and security facilities, including the General Command of the Armed Forces, the General Intelligence Service, Khartoum Air Base, and the airport district where senior army officers reside.
