Nyala, November 11 (Darfur24)
Residents of Nyala in South Darfur reported on Monday that two detainees have died inside Daqris Prison, west of the city, amid allegations of starvation, torture, and denial of medical treatment.
The family of one of the deceased told Darfur24 that their relative, aged around 50, died inside the prison last week after being accused by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of spying for the army.
According to his family, the deceased was a retired police officer from the Al-Wadi neighborhood. He had diabetes and high blood pressure, but was prevented from taking his medication inside the prison, leading to a severe decline in his health before he died.
The brother of the second detainee, who requested anonymity, told Darfur24 that his brother, only identified as Hafez, was arrested from the livestock market in Nyala.
He said Hafez, who previously worked with the RSF, was accused of financial misconduct and cooperating with the army. He alleged that his brother was subjected to beatings and torture and that his health condition deteriorated before he was transferred to a Turkish hospital, where he later died.
Relatives of detainees said starvation and mistreatment are widespread inside Daqris Prison, adding that RSF personnel have reduced food to one meal per day and continue to pressure detainees to confess to charges.
Daqris Prison, located in Al-Salam locality, holds thousands of detainees, including civilians, political activists, and military personnel from Khartoum, Al-Jazirah, Kordofan, and Darfur.
Families of detainees say visits are tightly restricted and often require mediation through influential community figures or RSF officers.
