Al-Daein, October 18 (Darfur24)
Residents of Al-Neem Internally Displaced Persons’ Camp (IDP) in East Darfur have launched a community initiative to build the first school in Sabreen Camp, west of Al-Daein, which currently has no educational facilities.
The initiative comes as the new school year begins, amid the collapse and destruction of schools across the state due to the ongoing conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces. The war has disrupted education in East Darfur for more than two years.
The Emergency Room of Al-Neem Camp said on its Facebook page that construction has started in coordination with the local education department and community volunteers. The school will be built using local materials, with support being mobilized from philanthropists and residents, to enable displaced children to enroll in the current academic year. The planned school is expected to serve more than 14,000 displaced people in the camp.
The Emergency Room called on the camp community to participate in the campaign to support education and protect the future of their children, noting the sharp decline in schooling due to the war.
The Ministry of Education and Instruction in East Darfur announced the start of the school year on October 1, despite major challenges, including teacher salary shortages, poor learning environments, and the lack of adequate classrooms.
