Adré, October 6 (Darfur 24)
A Sudanese refugee was killed in the Adré camp in eastern Chad after being attacked with a sharp object, in the latest incident of escalating violence within refugee camps.
Sources inside the camp told Darfur24 on Monday that the victim, Hamid Khamis, 30, sustained multiple fatal stab wounds to the abdomen and other parts of his body, resulting in his immediate death.
According to the sources, the incident began as a minor dispute between the victim and the perpetrator, but it quickly escalated into violence, leading to death.
Sources added that Chadian police arrested the suspect after he attempted to flee the scene and have launched an investigation to determine the motives and circumstances surrounding the crime.
Adré camp is one of the largest Sudanese refugee camps in eastern Chad, hosting thousands of people who fled the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
It has recently witnessed a surge in violence and growing tensions among refugees, raising concerns about deteriorating security and humanitarian conditions. The overcrowding of the camps and weak security infrastructure have further exacerbated the situation.
Chad currently hosts hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees who fled the conflict that erupted on April 15, 2023.
