El Fasher, September 30 (Darfur24)

At least six people were killed and 23 others injured on Tuesday when artillery shells struck a shelter for displaced people in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, local sources told Darfur24.

Eyewitnesses said the shelling started in the morning at Ali Bin Abu Talib School, which is hosting displaced families in the Abu Shouk neighborhood, causing multiple casualties, mostly women and children. Volunteers rushed to evacuate the wounded and recover bodies.

Amira Suleiman, a member of the shelter’s steering committee, told Darfur24 that four people died on the spot and 19 others were injured, many of them in critical condition and transferred to the Saudi Hospital.

A health source at the Abu Shouk Health Centre said the death toll later rose to six after a woman and a child succumbed to their injuries before reaching the hospital.

The source noted that the Abu Shouk Health Centre, located near the school, has been out of service since last week after doctors and volunteers left the city, worsening the plight of displaced families at the site.
