Amdafog, June 19(Darfur 24)

Three Sudanese were killed by gunmen in the Central African Republic (CAR) while they were on their way to the town of Tarfela in the border province of Birao triggering tensions on the border between the two countries.

Eyewitnesses told Darfur 24 that the incident caused security tensions in the Sudanese region of Amdafog and neighboring towns in CAR, after hundreds of families of the Sudanese victims gathered and vowed to take revenge on the families of the perpetrators in the Tarfela area of CAR.

A local official in Amdafog, who preferred to remain anonymous, told Darfur 24 that the security tensions led to the flight of all members of the Kara tribe, refugees residing in the Sudanese city of Amdafog, for fear of reprisals.

The brother of one of the victims, Khaled Al-Hussein, told Darfur 24 that the three disappeared while on their way to the town of Tarfila in the Central African Republic’s Brão province. When the local authorities arrived in the area, they confirmed their deaths in the town of Tarfila.

The incident comes days after Sudanese refugees were killed in a similar armed robbery in the Birao region, amid fears of widespread looting and killing in the border area with Sudan.

In early June, five Sudanese were killed and five others wounded in an attack by armed locals in the Ingliz area just across the border.

More than 38,000 Sudanese have sought refuge in the Central African Republic, out of a total of 4.1 million people who have fled to neighboring countries since the outbreak of the war, according to the UNHCR.
