El Fasher April 29(Darfur 24)

Wave of mass displacement continues from El Fasher and the surrounding IDP camps, most notably Zamzam, Abshok, and Abuja, as the siege intensifies and fighting escalates in the city, according to eyewitnesses.

Witnesses confirmed to Darfur 24 the arrival of dozens of families fleeing El Fasher to the areas of Shangil Tobay, Tawila, and Mellit amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions.

Adam Rijal, spokesperson for the General Coordination for Displaced Persons and Refugees in Darfur, confirmed the continued daily flow of displaced persons from El Fasher to Tawila town. He pointed out that displacement from the Abuja and Abshok camps continues, amid severe shortages of food, medicine, shelter, and sanitation services.

The Coordination had previously announced the arrival of approximately 560,000 displaced persons to Tawila town, fleeing ongoing clashes between the Sudanese army and its allies on the one hand, and the Rapid Support Forces on the other.

An emergency room volunteer in Mellit, located 65 km north of El Fasher, reported that dozens of families have arrived in the city this month, facing severe shortages of food, water, and shelter.

He indicated that some families have been hosted by residents of the city, while others have taken refuge in shelters without any intervention or action. A census from humanitarian organizations so far.

The emergency room in Shangil Tobay, 55 km southwest of El Fasher, also announced that it had received more than 1,400 families in 10 days, warning of a deteriorating humanitarian situation in the absence of urgent humanitarian support.

The room explained on its page that the “Goz Bena” area is witnessing a large overcrowding of displaced persons, with severe shortages of food, water, and shelter. It noted limited efforts to provide meals despite limited resources.

It appealed to humanitarian organizations and donors to provide aid, including food, drinking water, health clinics, medications for chronic diseases, and shoes and clothing for children and women.

In the same context, activists on social media posted videos, verified by Darfur 24, documenting the arrival of dozens of displaced families from Zamzam camp to the town of Nertiti in Central Darfur State.

Activist and volunteer Mohamed Ibrahim told Darfur 24 that the conditions of these families are “extremely dire,” stressing their urgent need for food, medicine, and shelter, especially since most of them are children, women, and the elderly, and face the threat of rains as the autumn season approaches.

The Rapid Support Forces are seeking to overthrow the 6th Infantry Division in El Fasher, the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in Darfur, after seizing control of army divisions in Nyala, Zalingei, El Geneina, and El Daein in 2023.
